According to the initial investigation by Louisiana State Police Troop E, a 2001 Infiniti QX4 was traveling northbound on Minorca Road when the driver, 18-year-old Gregory Steele of Vidalia, lost control of the vehicle for reasons still under investigation. The vehicle left the roadway and overturned, resulting in a devastating crash scene.
Both Michelle Baity and Jacob Bonnette were passengers in the vehicle and were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. They sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene by responding authorities. Another passenger, also unrestrained, survived the crash but sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The driver, Gregory Steele, sustained minor injuries.
